The chemistry and design of various new types of small fuel cells is explained by Zhao. Novel architectures promise more compact cells, with ever higher energy densities and lifetimes.
Some designs use silicon micromachining. This harnesses the highly developed silicon fabs that are now also turning to machining mechanics on small submillimeter scales. Silicon is also useful because of its high structural strength and general inertness to many reagents that might be present in a fuel cell.
Some physics of the interactions in the electrolyte fluids is also discussed in one chapter.
The chapters were contributed by different researchers and the overall tone is positive. You can also see that research is proceeding on a global scale. The recent rise in oil prices acts as a driver for these efforts. The reader can expect advances in commercial micro fuel cells.
